Celebrating Advent Plus a Tutorial!

|

Hi friends! I hope you all had a fabulous Thanksgiving last week.

So now that the turkey’s behind us, it’s time to look ahead toward Christmas! But along the way we get to prepare our hearts and homes through the Advent season. Yay, so much fun getting ready for Christmas, no?

Well my super awesome bloggin mastermind friends and I are putting together some fun posts leading up to Christmas and this week I get to host our “advent” week. Advent is the season of preparation for the celebration of the Nativity of Jesus at Christmas.

So what do we do during Advent? Glad you asked. We get to do lots of fun things. Like prepare our hearts and minds for the birth of Jesus through reading devotions and thinking about the true meaning of Christmas. Jesse Tree activities are fun to do with kids, check out Ann Voskamp’s which is really nice. Also lighting candles, each week leading up to Christmas.

We like to do an advent calendar to celebrate the days leading up to Christmas by doing fun things as a family or sharing little treats. So I’m going to show you how to make one yourself just like ours.

I started with a big picture frame (ours is about 20×26 inches), this was an old one we didn’t use. So all you need is that frame and backing part.

Then you’re going to cover it with some pretty paper (I just used plain craft paper from the $1 store)
And I got these cute little paper sack envelopes from Michaels’ for about $2 a package that comes with 25. Space them out over your frame.

Get the kids involved in the decorating. We just had some holiday stickers and this Martha Stewart adhesive border pad to put along the sides.

Now, It’s a good idea to plan ahead and make a list of special “treats’ for each day but you can just wing it too and add as you go along.

Number each of the envelopes (1-24), I had some number stickers handy but you can just write them.

And then put little slips of paper inside with a note about what you’re doing that day. Some of ours include:

  • watching a holiday movie
  • going out for ice cream
  • making hot chocolate
  • baking Christmas cookies with mom
  • writing letters to Santa
  • bake birthday cake for baby Jesus (best for the 24th)

Other options can include doing service projects or helping others (lil light of mine is a great one to check out), writing down verses from scriptures to read aloud, etc.

The goal is to just do something fun together.

You can find other fun holiday ideas on my Holiday Inspiration Pinterest board.

Check out the other lovely posts and join us as we go blog hoppin through Christmas!
